PlayStation 3 now $299, slimmer version coming September 1st

News just in from gamescom

It’s confirmed! The PlayStation 3 is now available for $299. Yes, NOW! Today, Kaz Hirai also announced a new, slimmer form factor 120 GB PS3 (available September 1st).  This has to be the beginning of “The Year of The Sony PlayStation 3″. This coupled with PSP GO and titles such as FFXIII coming out really has me excited.

From Kotaku.com

“Sony’s official press release for the PlayStation 3 Slim reveals a few updated features and a whole slew of sexy product shots of the PS3’s skinny little brother.

The new model heralds a slew of changes for the PlayStation 3 brand, include a change in the official all-caps PLAYSTATION 3 brand to the PlayStation 3 everyone was using anyway, and a new PS3 logo, as seen etched on the side of the new console.

The new console will come standard with the recently announced firmware 3.0. A vertical stand will be made available for purchase to make the system vertical, and it will also house a Bravia Sync feature, allowing users to control the PS3 with their Bravia TV remote.

The final change is the removal of the Install Other OS feature, meaning no LINUX installs on the smaller unit. The release states that “The new PS3 system will focus on delivering games and other entertainment content, and users will not be able to install other Operating Systems to the new PS3 system.”"

Sony has also confirmed in a statement from Sony themselves….

“Now that we’re at a point where we’re three years into the lifecycle of the PS3″, “there are so many PS3 disc-based games that are available that we think — and noticed this from our research — that most consumers that are purchasing the PS3 cite PS3 games as a primary [reason]“.

“And it’s not just like 50 or 60 percent. It’s well into the 80 or 90 percentile range who are purchasing it for PS3 [games]. We do know that there are next gen consumers wanting to come over the the PS3. Most of those are consumers who have not utilized their PS2 for a little while and they’re ready to jump into the PlayStation 3.”

Truly a shame and there are plenty of PS2 game worthy of having BC in the new Slim PS3 but the numbers don’t lie.

Kuroshio Sea Video HD

Kuroshio Sea – 2nd largest aquarium tank in the world – (song is Please don’t go by Barcelona) from Jon Rawlinson on Vimeo.

(Give this some time to load before watching…otherwise you won’t have smooth playback)

This was shot at the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium in Japan. http://www.kaiyouhaku.com/en/

The main tank called the “Kuroshio Sea” holds 7,500-cubic meters (1,981,290 gallons) of water and features the world’s second largest acrylic glass panel, measuring 8.2 meters by 22.5 meters with a thickness of 60 centimeters.  Whale sharks and manta rays are kept amongst many other fish species in the main tank.

The music is “Please don’t go” by Barcelona.  Buy this song on the iTunes store: http://bit.ly/1zAVu

The aquarium video was shot using a Canon 5DMKII with a 28-135mm lens.

Toshiba Timesculpture Advert

Toshiba timesculpture advert shows benefits of upscaling in their new advert. Toshiba used 200 camcorders arranged in a ring very much like the bullet-time technique used in the Matrix to create this interesting video.

Concept PSP

Pretty sexy concept if you ask me. I wish Sony could come up with something like this.

Gran Turismo in 4 times the resolution of Full HD

Polyphony Digital also presented two technological trials for the next generation at this event. Both of the presentations, were founded on the philosophy of “achieving the highest possible quality” held over the years by Gran Turismo.

One of these, was a time trial competition using Sony’s newest digital cinema projector, the “SRX-S110”. Gran Turismo 5 prologue is already in Full HD resolution at 1920 x 1080 pixels, providing the highest resolution possible in today’s TV content. However in this time trial, the Full HD image was increased to twice the resolution both vertically and horizontally (4x the surface area), enabling game play at an ultra high resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. This was performed by connecting and synchronizing four Playstation 3’s outputting a quarter of the image each at 1920×1080 pixels, but you must remember this demands an extremely high quality image from the source that can withstand the ultra high resolution. It can be said that this demonstration was only made possible, because the source image was Gran Turismo….
